Telefónica is rolling out 17 edge computing nodes throughout Spain to establish competitive, sustainable and secure European technology infrastructure centred on edge computing. The initiative targets digital transformation needs across both business and public sector organisations.
The Spanish carrier contends its edge expansion represents a European-level breakthrough. Ten nodes are currently operational, including two in Madrid and single installations in Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, Málaga, Palma de Mallorca, Bilbao, A Coruña and Terrassa (Barcelona).
Expansion will proceed through 2026, bringing edge infrastructure to Zaragoza, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Valladolid, Gijón, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Santiago de Compostela and Mérida. The complete 17-node network will deliver edge computing coverage across the nation, according to the operator.
Rather than relying on traditional data centres or centralised cloud platforms, Telefónica's edge infrastructure occupies its repurposed telecommunications exchanges, formerly known as central offices. The operator maintains these locations "meet stringent security and high‑availability requirements for deployment and operations".
As organisations seek greater compute, AI, power and technical floor space capacity, Telefónica argues its extensive nationwide network of telecommunications exchanges provides a strategic competitive advantage.
Edge computing shifts processing and storage nearer to end users, enabling data from numerous connected devices to be handled at its origin point. Like cloud services, edge delivers elasticity and high availability, yet achieves lower latency through proximity and stronger data governance through local control.
The nodes incorporate AI functionality that customers can leverage without substantial upfront investment. Organisations gain access to GPU resources as a service model, avoiding capital expenditure while maintaining data sovereignty and minimising latency.
Telefónica characterises these capabilities as essential for an evolving landscape where connectivity transcends traditional person-to-person or person-to-cloud patterns to encompass object-to-object communications, person/object-to-edge interactions, and edge-to-cloud connectivity.
The operator states that "this Telefónica‑led plan promotes the development of Edge and Cloud technologies in Europe and opens the possibility for other European operators to use these infrastructures securely, develop technology, and reduce dependence on service providers whose platforms are located outside the European Union. In doing so, the project strengthens Europe's industry while contributing to greater digital data sovereignty."
Edge infrastructure complements existing fibre and mobile networks, particularly 5G deployment. Telefónica highlights that it has decommissioned its copper infrastructure, its FTTH footprint encompasses over 31 million properties and its 5G coverage reaches nearly 95% of Spain's population.
The operator anticipates that combining edge, fibre and 5G capabilities will enable long-anticipated applications including Industry 4.0, autonomous driving, logistics optimisation, port operations, retail innovation, massive machine communications and digital twins to achieve mainstream adoption.
Edge infrastructure aligns with emerging application ecosystems and novel use cases required across sectors pursuing digital transformation, Telefónica continues, encompassing APIs and the GSMA's Open Gateway project objectives.
Telefónica states it is "driving the development of an integrating platform, enabling third‑party innovation and optimising infrastructure to enhance customer offerings. The company identifies needs, collaborates with stakeholders and promotes innovative, disruptive use cases that were not feasible before the advent of Edge Computing – within a new open, decentralised, multi‑provider model. Unlike closed, single‑owner and highly centralized solutions offered by major cloud service providers, this project pursues a model in which providers share interfaces and interoperability, compatibility and portability are guaranteed—delivering clear advantages for future customers."
The initiative aligns with the European strategic roadmap for cloud edge development, grounded in EU frameworks including the Digital Strategy, the Joint Declaration by the 27 Member States, and European Commission objectives regarding Data and Digital Sovereignty.
An Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI) administered by the European Commission solicited proposals from Member States aimed at positioning European organisations to lead emerging digital services through differentiated and interconnected edge computing technologies and infrastructure.
Telefónica Spain's submission received the highest national-level rating in June 2021 and was forwarded to the IPCEI process for edge computing development.
