Virgin Media O2 (VMO2) is expanding its high-speed broadband offering by deploying 2Gbps service across its cable network infrastructure. The rollout has so far reached 18 separate locations, serving approximately three million residences. The company intends to make the service available across the majority of its cable footprint by the end of 2027.

When combined with properties already connected to Virgin Media's fibre-to-the-premises network, the operator now offers its Gig2 package—the fastest tier in its portfolio—to more than 10 million UK households. Subscribers on the upgraded cable infrastructure will receive typical download speeds of 2,000Mbps alongside upload speeds of 100Mbps.

The enhanced speeds address rising household bandwidth demands driven by activities such as 4K video consumption, competitive gaming, remote work arrangements and the proliferation of internet-connected devices within homes.

Jeanie York, chief technology officer at VMO2, commented on the development: "This is an important milestone for our fixed network. Ultimately, people don't care what kind of pipe is connecting them as long the service is fast, reliable and delivers what is expected. By making 2Gbps speeds available over cable for the first time, we're extending multi-gigabit capability to more parts of the UK and showing the continued potential of our existing network infrastructure that still very much meets the increasing needs of consumers. As demand for data continues to grow, we're investing across our network to deliver faster, more reliable connectivity."
