The clock is ticking for UK enterprises still relying on outdated telephone infrastructure. Openreach has sounded the alarm that businesses face a six-month window to transition away from the nation's ageing phone network, as the company rolls out its Big Switch Off campaign to push Communications Providers and lagging organisations toward modern alternatives.

Approximately 350,000 business locations remain unmigrated ahead of the Public Switched Telephone Network's scheduled retirement on 31 January 2027. The infrastructure operator estimates that around 1.5 million lines continue functioning on copper-based systems, powering not just traditional phone services but also payment processing equipment, lift emergency systems and security infrastructure.

When the PSTN goes dark, these operational technologies face the risk of failure unless organisations have already upgraded or switched to digital equivalents. Beyond technical failure, Openreach warns that postponing migration exposes firms to service interruptions, operational friction and unnecessary expenditure.

The PSTN switch-off is now just six months away and there is no extension to the deadline. While millions of customers and many providers and businesses have already made great progress, too many organisations remain exposed to unnecessary risk by delaying their migration plans.

James Lilley, Openreach Director of All-IP

Lilley elaborated on the stakes, noting that inaction has shifted from a matter of uncertainty to one of readiness. "Those who wait risk leaving customers exposed to avoidable service disruption. The consequences go beyond technical issues – they can lead to lost revenue, operational difficulties and a poorer experience for customers."

The directive from Openreach is unambiguous: "Act now. Businesses should speak to their service provider today, understand which services could be affected, and make sure they have a clear migration plan in place well before January 2027."
