A special gathering of the EU's Scientific Panel on frontier AI safety and risks took place as the group continues its examination of recent loss-of-control episodes. Working alongside the Commission's AI Office, panellists have developed a series of inquiries directed at organisations behind the models in question. Henna Virkkunen, Executive Vice-President for Tech Sovereignty, Security and Democracy, participated in the session.
The panel comprises 60 leading independent experts from around the world who provide guidance to the EU AI Office and member state authorities on matters including systemic risks, model classification, evaluation methodologies, and cross-border market surveillance. At this meeting, members put forward their recommendations to the Commission regarding frontier AI safety and security risks.
The EU has the first law in the world that addresses systemic risk from AI, and we need state-of-the-art scientific input. AI capabilities are advancing rapidly, but with a strong legal framework, decisive enforcement and the best scientific minds supporting this work, Europe can lead in ensuring safe and secure AI.
Henna Virkkunen, Executive Vice-President for Tech Sovereignty, Security and Democracy
