Portable optical station proves its mettle in field deployment
Archangel Lightworks, a developer of laser-based satellite communications, has wrapped up field trials demonstrating the TERRA-M, which the company describes as the world's smallest operational optical ground station capable of deployment. UK Space Minister Liz Lloyd endorsed the achievement, with the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory providing funding for the trials.
During a multi-day test conducted in the Mediterranean this month, the TERRA-M successfully exchanged encrypted data with a satellite orbiting at low altitude. The company repeated the trials using the US Space Development Agency's laser communication standard to validate dependability.
The device's optical head measures just 1.1m in height and 0.7m across, making it substantially smaller than conventional optical ground stations. Unlike traditional installations, it requires no protective dome structure, fits inside standard vehicles or aircraft, and can be mounted atop buildings. The company has already begun delivering TERRA-M units and ground-station-as-a-service offerings to clients.
Laser links reshape satellite infrastructure strategy
Optical laser communications between ground and orbital assets are emerging as essential infrastructure for managing expanding satellite networks while offering a secure, high-capacity substitute for conventional radio transmission. Primary use cases centre on backhaul connectivity and transmission of Earth observation imagery, both critical for programmes including Artemis.
The approach serves dual civilian and military purposes, circumventing exposure risks inherent in terrestrial and undersea cable systems. High-volume satellite data handling becomes feasible, potentially narrowing connectivity gaps in underserved regions. As orbital computing facilities proliferate, optical ground infrastructure will become increasingly vital for linking space-based and terrestrial networks.
According to Richard Johanson, Archangel Lightworks' chief executive, "The TERRA-M is uniquely capable of rapid, secure data transfer with satellites while also being small enough to be deployed and redeployed at the point of need."
Johanson further stated: "We are on a pathway to providing resilient, large-scale deployable networks of optical ground stations. The demand for space-based information and connectivity solutions continues to grow exponentially, and we are pleased that our technology will play a role in this exciting new global communications infrastructure."
Funding and partnerships accelerate deployment
The company's financial backing includes investment from Santander Alternative Investments, the National Security Strategic Investment Fund, Blackfinch Ventures, Oxford Capital, Lycka Limited, and Oxford Science Enterprises. An oversubscribed Series A round last month brought in $13.5m (£10m), bringing cumulative funding to $20m.
Support extends across UK government bodies, including the Space Agency, the Department of Science and Technology, and the Ministry of Defence. Archangel Lightworks maintains memoranda of understanding with operators such as Starcloud and Omantel, alongside several commercial contracts.
