The startup, which emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic, addresses a persistent challenge in multiplayer gaming: toxic behaviour in voice chats frequently escapes detection because game developers depend on player complaints and labour-intensive manual review processes. Distinguishing genuine harassment from ordinary competitive banter has proven difficult for existing moderation solutions.

VoicePatrol's offering centres on artificial intelligence that monitors voice communications in real time, identifying severe toxicity and enabling action within five seconds while preserving normal player interactions. The company serves gaming studios of all sizes—from indie developers to major publishers—across PC, console and virtual reality platforms.

The funding round

GapMinder VC led the €3M investment, with participation from Impact Ventures, Ollin Ventures and The Build Fund. Robert Herscovici, Investment Director at GapMinder VC, explained the rationale: "VoicePatrol is solving this problem at the infrastructure level, using AI to detect extreme toxicity in real time and take action within 5 seconds. We invested because Matei and the VoicePatrol team have built a technology that addresses a real pain point at massive scale. And we believe live voice moderation will become an essential part of the multiplayer gaming stack".

How it works

The technology prioritises context awareness over simple keyword filtering. Matei Trebien, CEO and Co-Founder, noted: "We need to leave normal banter and competitive trash talk alone and that requires a deep understanding of gaming context, not just simple keyword matching. Then we need to run everything fast and cheaply on our own AWS infrastructure, without third-party API calls adding latency and cost. If we do this well, games simply become more fun".

According to VoicePatrol, its system reduces severe toxicity by 55–75% within three weeks, lowers moderation expenses by 30–70% and extends coverage to 100% of public lobbies.

Business model and deployment

VoicePatrol operates on a business-to-business basis, licensing its voice moderation technology to gaming studios. Prospective clients can access a complimentary two-week audit to identify undetected toxicity before committing to the platform. The company has not disclosed specific pricing or revenue details.

Capital from this round will support worldwide expansion and continued refinement of the AI-powered voice moderation system for both independent and AAA gaming studios.
