Backed by the EuroHPC JU, a refreshed iteration of the EUMaster4HPC programme aims to meet surging demand for specialists in high-performance computing—a field the EU views as essential to its technological independence and competitive standing globally.
The master's degree will equip young professionals with expertise in scaling HPC operations while deepening ties with industry partners and preparing them for emerging work in artificial intelligence and quantum computing. By positioning Europe as a leader in computing education, the scheme intends to produce HPC specialists aligned with what the European job market requires. Over the course of four intakes, hundreds of students will complete programmes offering up to 120 ECTS credits, gaining the sophisticated knowledge needed for both research and commercial HPC work.
Prospective students have until 15 August 2026 to submit applications through the EUMaster4HPC website.
Nine universities spanning eight member states will serve as awarding institutions. The University of Luxembourg leads the consortium, alongside the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Politecnico di Milano, Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, Sorbonne University, and Sofia University. Two universities previously involved—AGH University of Krakow and VSB – Technical University of Ostrava—continue their participation, while Freie Universität Berlin joins as a new member. The programme also engages 13 additional universities, major supercomputing facilities, and commercial partners, granting students access to cutting-edge computing resources. Ongoing partnerships with industry strengthen the connection between teaching, discovery, and commercial application.
The EuroHPC JU will commit nearly EUR 10 million over six years. The initiative aligns closely with the EuroHPC Virtual Academy (EVITA), which facilitates shared learning across institutions. Working alongside the European Technology Platform for High-Performance Computing (ETP4HPC), the scheme deepens collaboration with the private sector, ensuring graduates meet Europe's technological and employment requirements. The programme represents a major commitment to building Europe's cadre of HPC, AI, and quantum specialists.
The curriculum prioritises cross-border study, mandating that participants complete coursework in at least two countries. Internships and industry-run workshops are embedded to boost job readiness and real-world capability. A comprehensive quality framework—encompassing regular evaluation, curriculum updates, and tracking of graduate outcomes—maintains alignment with employer expectations and long-term viability. Increasing female participation and fostering broad inclusion remain explicit programme goals.
About the EUMaster4HPC
The European Master for High Performance Computing stands as Europe's first continent-wide master's programme dedicated to HPC. Organised by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking, it unites leading universities, supercomputing hubs, commercial entities, and research organisations to nurture a new wave of European HPC specialists. The curriculum merges theoretical rigour with practical training at HPC facilities, readying graduates to address demanding problems in science, technology, and commerce.
About EuroHPC JU
The EuroHPC JU functions as a legal and financial mechanism through which the European Union and member countries coordinate and combine resources to establish Europe as a supercomputing powerhouse.
To furnish Europe with state-of-the-art supercomputing capacity, the EuroHPC JU has already acquired 12 supercomputers distributed across the continent, including JUPITER and Alice Recoque, which represent Europe's first exascale systems.
Researchers and organisations from government and business throughout Europe can tap into EuroHPC supercomputers through periodic access competitions, enabling advances in science and development of applications with relevance to industry, research, and society.
The EuroHPC JU currently oversees rollout of 19 AI factories across the continent, supplemented by 13 AI Factory Antennas, delivering free, tailored assistance to small and medium enterprises and emerging companies.
The organisation is also constructing a European quantum computing infrastructure, bringing together varied European quantum technologies alongside existing supercomputing assets.
The EuroHPC JU finances research and innovation efforts aimed at constructing a comprehensive European supercomputing value chain, spanning chip design, software, applications for supercomputers, and the expertise needed to sustain strong European HPC capabilities.
Following the recent enactment of Council Regulation (EU) 2026/150, the EuroHPC JU's remit has expanded to encompass new priorities: deployment of AI Gigafactories throughout Europe and advancement of quantum technologies.
EUMaster4HPC receives funding from the EuroHPC JU under the Digital Europe Programme, with a total budget of EUR 7 million. The initiative forms part of the EuroHPC JU's comprehensive vision to construct a fully integrated European supercomputing ecosystem and broaden uptake of HPC infrastructure.
Initiated in January 2022, the scheme is managed by the University of Luxembourg and brings together European universities, research and supercomputing organisations, and industrial and SME collaborators. Teaching commenced in autumn 2022 with the arrival of the first student cohort.
