Finland will host the latest addition to Europe's supercomputing arsenal. The LUMI-AI system, set to operate from CSC – IT Center for Science's facility in Kajaani, will be run by a seven-nation consortium spanning Finland, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Norway, and Poland.

Built on AMD Instinct™ MI430X GPUs and 6th Gen AMD EPYC™ 256-core processors, the machine will tackle computationally demanding AI applications involving massive, shifting and often sensitive information. It will deliver ten times the AI processing power of the existing LUMI supercomputer, bolstering Europe's standing in artificial intelligence, high-performance computing, and data-driven science.

Since April 2025, the LUMI AI Factory has been supplying computing power and technical assistance to European small and medium enterprises and startups. The initiative concentrates on three core sectors:

  • manufacturing
  • health and life sciences
  • communication technologies and networks

The facility also extends support to researchers working in climate science, materials research, and language processing.

The LUMI AI Factory rests on the proven success of the original LUMI system and draws on years of expertise in developing, preparing, and rolling out advanced AI technologies on a continental scale.

This contract signing marks a turning point for the programme. Rolling out LUMI-AI will substantially grow the continent's AI and HPC infrastructure and expand the range of services available to European users.

With LUMI-AI, EuroHPC JU has now signed its sixth AI Factory procurement contract for a next-generation AI-optimised supercomputer. Together, these systems will form a powerful European AI infrastructure ecosystem, enabling SMEs and startups to access world-class supercomputing resources, unlock the full potential of AI, and drive innovation, growth, and technological leadership across Europe.

Timeline and funding

BULL won the contract following a tender process that opened in May 2025, while Finland secured its role as the hosting nation in December 2024.

Though aimed primarily at supporting startups and SMEs pursuing research and innovation, the system will also open its doors to the wider scientific community. EuroHPC JU and the LUMI AIF consortium will jointly allocate computing time based on their respective financial contributions.

The system should be operational and available to users in 2027.

The total investment amounts to EUR 387 800 000 for purchasing, delivering, installing and maintaining the supercomputer. EuroHPC JU will cover half the cost through the Digital Europe Programme, with the LUMI AIF consortium providing the remaining half.

Quantum and factory expansion

Alongside the supercomputer, a quantum system called LUMI-IQ will establish an experimental platform merging HPC and AI with quantum computing technologies.

The LUMI AI Factory sits within a broader European network of AI Factories. EuroHPC JU currently oversees 19 AI factories offering free, tailored assistance to SMEs and startups. In October 2025, 13 additional AI Factory Antennas were chosen to widen the reach of the network.

By late July 2026, EuroHPC JU had opened bidding for teams to construct and manage future AI Gigafactories across the EU.

EuroHPC JU functions as a joint legal and financial mechanism uniting the European Union with member states to pool efforts and capital, aiming to position Europe at the forefront of supercomputing innovation.

The organisation has already acquired 12 supercomputers spread throughout the continent, including JUPITER and Alice Recoque, which rank among Europe's first exascale machines.

Researchers, commercial entities, and public institutions throughout Europe can request time on EuroHPC supercomputers through open access calls, regardless of location, to pursue scientific advancement and develop applications with industrial, scientific and societal value.

EuroHPC JU is also constructing a European Quantum Computing infrastructure that combines various European quantum technologies with operational supercomputers. Through the EuroHPC Quantum Access Pilot call, scientists, government bodies, and companies can now request free access to select quantum systems. This opportunity permits users to test diverse quantum approaches to accelerate discovery and foster technological progress.

The organisation also invests in research and innovation to establish a complete European supercomputing value chain, spanning processors, software, applications and the expertise needed to build strong European HPC capabilities.

Following the recent passage of Council Regulation (EU) 2026/150, EuroHPC JU's scope has widened to include new priorities centred on rolling out AI Gigafactories across Europe and advancing quantum technology development.
