A fresh EU-backed initiative will channel up to €10 billion in public money—drawn from both Brussels and national budgets—to catalyze private sector participation worth at least €20 billion. The scheme targets expansion of artificial intelligence processing capacity throughout the bloc, making computational resources available to startups, growing firms, mid-market enterprises, industrial players, research institutions and government bodies for tasks including model training, inference operations and parameter refinement of cutting-edge AI systems.
These AI Gigafactories will integrate state-of-the-art processors, software frameworks, cloud infrastructure, rapid data transmission systems and low-carbon data facilities. Operating alongside Europe's existing network of 19 AI Factories, the new facilities are designed to reinforce the continent's competitive edge, operational independence and geopolitical standing in artificial intelligence.
The programme will permit the continent to construct sophisticated AI systems using domestically controlled infrastructure, consistent with European regulatory frameworks and principles. Models created within these AI Gigafactories will comply with EU requirements governing personal data handling, system reliability, cybersecurity and responsible innovation.
