Fibrus has wrapped up the opening stage of its government-backed Project Gigabit initiative across Cumbria, enabling more than 37,700 residences and commercial premises in isolated areas of the region to access Full Fibre broadband services.
The deployment represents a portion of a £150 million commitment from the UK government directed toward expanding broadband infrastructure in rural zones where consistent connectivity has historically posed challenges.
The complete initiative is projected to encompass over 53,500 properties. When combined with Fibrus' own commercial network expansion efforts, the combined deployment is anticipated to deliver next-generation broadband access to 99% of properties throughout Cumbria by the conclusion of 2027.
UK Telecoms Minister Ian Murray remarked: "Fibrus' milestone is real progress in bringing faster broadband to Cumbria's rural and remote communities that would otherwise miss out without government investment." He added that the initiative benefits local enterprises and civic groups by "reaching more customers, supporting volunteers and helping people stay connected to each other," describing it as "one way we are spreading opportunity to every part of the country."
