EXA Infrastructure is developing what will be the first transatlantic subsea cable in ten years to be built and operated by a single company. The 6,552km EXA Meridian route will connect New Jersey on the US east coast to Brean in the United Kingdom, with operations commencing in 2029.
This cable marks the ninth transatlantic link within EXA Infrastructure's portfolio, introducing additional bandwidth and routing options connecting North America with Europe. The infrastructure has been engineered with 24 fibre pairs and will deliver more than 500 Tbps of capacity, serving hyperscalers, neoclouds, financial institutions, governments and research organisations.
The initiative has achieved Contract in Force status with Xtera, a subsea telecommunications supplier who will provide critical components. EXA Infrastructure assumes responsibility for overall project management and delivery.
The cable will integrate into EXA Infrastructure's existing operational footprint rather than functioning independently. A new landing facility at Brean will link EXA Meridian to ground-based networks extending toward Slough and the company's broader European infrastructure holdings.
Demand across the Atlantic is changing quickly. The largest customers are increasingly planning in spectrum and fibre pairs, and the capacity they will need towards the end of the decade has to be built now.
Jim Fagan, EXA Infrastructure CEO
Fagan stated that EXA Meridian, with its Ready For Service date of 2029, will be positioned as the sole cable offering the bandwidth necessary to address these substantial customer requirements.
By integrating EXA Meridian directly into infrastructure that we own and operate across Europe, we can give customers greater route choice, resilience and accountability. It demonstrates the discipline behind our investment strategy and our confidence in continuing to build as commercial demand requires.
