Four leading European telecommunications companies have committed to investigating a coordinated approach to acquiring Mobile Satellite Services (MSS) spectrum through a signed Letter of Intent.
The alliance of Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Telefónica and Vodafone targets expansion of satellite-based connectivity throughout Europe by enabling mobile subscribers to establish connections directly with orbiting satellites. The initiative aligns with the European Commission's broader strategy to reinforce the continent's sovereignty over vital communications infrastructure while enhancing network dependability and security.
Direct-to-Device (D2D) technology forms the cornerstone of this effort, permitting standard mobile handsets to link with satellites independently of ground-based network infrastructure.
The framework envisions that European mobile operators would gain fair and unrestricted access to the resulting services. Beyond spectrum acquisition, the partnership aims to extend coverage to regions currently underserved by conventional networks, bolster disaster response capabilities and foster development of a European satellite constellation.
The arrangement remains preliminary at this stage, with the operators having made no binding commitments regarding the joint bid or selection of a satellite operator. The four companies have also clarified that this cooperation will not displace their current satellite relationships.
